CCTV stands for Closed Caption Television. Unlike public broadcast TV, CCTV is
limited to a circuit or system. That system can be wired (connected electrically
through cable) or wireless (wireless video transmission).
Though most people think of CCTV as part of a security system, it has many other
valuable functions. CCTV can be used to monitor situations in locations where it
would be dangerous for humans. It can monitor situations where it would be cost
prohibitive to use human resources. Video can be recorded to allow a video log of
historical events for analyses and verification.
Though CCTV cannot provide physical security, it does provide financial security.
Most banks, stores and government agencies cannot get insurance unless they have CCTV systems.
Courts rely heavily on evidence CCTV recording can provide. Also consider, the very
presence of a working camera is sometimes enough to defuse and/or prevent a costly situation.
